Shirodhara

Shirodhara is one of Ayurveda’s most beloved treatments — a deeply meditative experience where a continuous, rhythmic stream of warm medicated oil is poured over the forehead (shiro means head, dhara means stream or flow). The treatment induces a profound state of calm and mental clarity.

How Shirodhara Works

The forehead is rich in nerve endings that connect to the brain’s limbic system, which governs stress responses and emotion. The rhythmic, warm oil flow:

  • Calms the autonomic nervous system
  • Reduces cortisol and stress hormones
  • Promotes the release of serotonin and melatonin
  • Deeply nourishes the scalp and hair

Each session begins with a relaxing Abhyanga (oil massage) of the head, neck, and shoulders, followed by 30–45 minutes of Shirodhara.

Who Benefits from Shirodhara?

  • Chronic stress and anxiety
  • Insomnia and sleep disorders
  • Migraine and tension headaches
  • Post-COVID neurological fatigue
  • High blood pressure (hypertension support)
  • Burnout and mental exhaustion
  • Hair fall and premature greying

Types of Shirodhara

Depending on your constitution and condition, Dr. Megha K S selects the appropriate liquid:

  • Taila Dhara — warm sesame or medicated herbal oil (most common, ideal for Vata)
  • Takra Dhara — medicated buttermilk (cooling, ideal for Pitta conditions like psoriasis)
  • Kashaya Dhara — herbal decoction (for specific conditions)
